How does therapy work?
As a Chinese American bilingual English/Cantonese psychotherapist, my first task is to “meet clients where they are” — by listening and understanding their concerns. I can then proceed to help them formulate therapy goals and objectives. Together we will determine the most relevant mode of therapy (i.e., individual, couple, family, or group). Depending on what the presenting issues are, the type of therapy (for example, solution-focused brief therapy, relational, family systems, psychodynamic, behavioral, or cognitive-behavioral therapy [CBT] approaches) that will best serve the client’s purposes will be identified and explained thoroughly. As we proceed, goals and objectives will be reviewed periodically to keep us on track and make sure therapy is accomplishing the goal, whether it’s changing or improving the client’s life, or providing support to maintain a desirable situation.
